Homemade Macaroni & Cheese

Save for Later!

Homemade Macaroni & Cheese is one of the best comfort foods Americans rely on. It’s so tempting to just grab a box of Kraft mac n cheese that we all grew up on, but the amount of artificial colors, flavors and ingredients in there is a big turnoff once knowing what these “fake” foods actually do to us. Instead, I find that making my own cheese sauce is the best way to go! Some people like to make it complicated with lots of different ingredients. I find that keeping it as simple as possible is much more enticing for a quick mid-week meal. It’s also a great way to use up a bunch of extra butter, cream, or cheese you might have in your fridge!

Ingredients for Homemade Macaroni & Cheese

Gluten-free pasta noodles: I prefer to use Jovial brown rice pasta noodles because I find that they hold up really well even when reheating the next few days.

Cheese sauce:My recipe is extremely simplified down to the most basic ingredients- butter, heavy cream, and cheese. Yum!

Note: Most people like to make a roux with flour and water to thicken their sauces. Honestly, this recipe didn’t need it because I found that the sauce thickened up really well and the end result was more than cheesy, thick and creamy. If I had added the roux, it would’ve become stodgy. To keep this recipe gluten-free if you really wanted to do a roux, I supposed you could use a gluten-free flour. I prefer the simplicity though of such clean, basic ingredients!
